Reels

A fishing reel is the contraption that holds, as well as recalls the line from a cast. There are different kinds of fishing reels for diferent uses. For bass fishing, there are two main types of reel: spinning reels and baitcasters.

Spinning Reel

Spinning Reel

A spinning reel is a reel that is used for primarily lighter bass fishing. They are used primarily with lighter, artificial bait, due to their inability to handle heavier line and baits. They are unique in the fact that they are able to switch from left-hand to right-hand retrieve, and vice-versa.Not only that, but unlike baitcasters, they have an inability to get a backlash from excessive spinning of the spool.

Baitcasting Reels

Baitcasting Reel

Baitcasters are a favorite among more experienced anglers due to their easiness to control, compared to spinning reels. However, when casting, it is very easy to get a "backlash" from not controlling the spool and letting it hit the water while the spool is stil spinning. Although many see baitcasters as the perferred reel when it comes to bass fishing, it takes an experienced fisherman to use it to its full effect.
